The Church of Sant’Agostino
The Organ
The notes of the organ accompany the various moments of the liturgical celebration. Dated 1522, it is, along with the one in the church of Santissima Annunziata, one of the finest works by the famous Sienese organ-maker Giovanni Piffero.
Originally set on the left wall of the nave, at the corner of the transept, it is now in the loft above the entrance portal, where it was moved perhaps because of earthquake tremors.
It has a double case, an exterior one of white lead and an inner one of fir left its natural wood color; this inner case was made when the organ was restored in 1987.
Above the case is a carved wooden canopy in the center of which, topped by a broken pediment, can be seen the arms of the Augustinian Order, with garlands hanging from it. Below are garlands carved with vegetable motifs and little angels holding clarions.
