The Church of Sant’Agostino

Fondi and Chigi Monuments

Continuing our tour of the church, we move into the left transept, where we find the Fondi family tomb by the Sienese artist Bartolomeo Neroni and the funerary monument of Agostino Chigi by Tommaso Redi.
The Fondi monument is a fresco which was discovered under a coat of whitewash in the twentieth century. The painting, made around 1560, depicts the funerary monument of the Fondi family. In a niche flanked by two obelisks is the sarcophagus, with two female figures on top of it. The aedicule culminates in a pediment, in the center of which is the Fondi family coat of arms held up by two winged putti.
The Chigi monument is sculpted and presents a tripartite structure: in the upper part, an oval niche holds the bust of Agostino Chigi wearing a necklace with the cross of the Order of Saint Stephen; the middle section contains the commemorative inscription, with the figures of Prudence on the left and Temperance on the right; finally, the bottom section holds the Chigi family arms.
