The Church of Sant’Agostino
The Birth of the Virgin
The birth of the Virgin Mary is the subject of a monochrome fresco in the first chapel in the right transept (the Bichi chapel), painted by the Sienese artist Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the second half of the fifteenth century. The use of perspective focuses our attention on the importance of this event: Mary, the mother of God, came into the world in order to make possible the incarnation of the Word.
