The Church of Sant’Agostino
Saint Rita
Also in the left transept is a statue of Saint Rita (1755) by the Sienese sculptor Giuseppe Maria Mazzuoli. She contemplates the crucifix, which is her iconographical attribute, because she was so devoted to Christ that she often desired to experience his same suffering. During her prayers, she felt a thorn from Christ’s crown piercing her forehead and causing a wound that only healed after she made a pilgrimage to Rome, where she asked the Lord for the grace of healing.
