The Way to Calvary

The Way to Calvary is mounted over the fourth altar on the right in the nave. This painting, made between the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth centuries by the Mannerists Alessandro Casolani and Ventura Salimbeni, depicts the moment when Jesus is led to Golgotha in the presence of Mary who, devastated by grief, faints, falling into the arms of the pious women. The face of Jesus, despite his suffering, is serene, because he knows that he will die and rise again to redeem mankind from original sin.
